Sainz Reflects on Binotto’s Arrival at Audi and Its Influence on His F1 Future

Carlos Sainz has shared his thoughts on former Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto joining Audi and whether this move will affect his own decision about his future in Formula 1 for the 2025 season. Binotto, who served as Team Principal at Ferrari from 2019 to 2022 and has been with the company since the mid-1990s, will assume the roles of Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer at Audi on August 1. This move is part of a significant restructure that will see CEO Andreas Seidl and executive Oliver Hoffmann leave Audi.

    Sainz’s Perspective on Binotto’s Move

Sainz was asked at the Belgian Grand Prix whether Binotto’s appointment would impact his decision about potentially joining Audi in 2025. He responded:

“First of all, I’m not up to date with everything that is going on at every team. But the arrival of Mattia to any team is positive because he has the experience of building a top team like Ferrari. He can bring that experience to Audi, and I’m sure he will be a great asset for them.”

Sainz emphasized the value that Binotto brings to any team due to his extensive experience and success at Ferrari. He believes that Binotto’s expertise will be beneficial to Audi as they aim to establish themselves as a competitive force in Formula 1.

    Audi’s Interest in Sainz

It’s rumored that Audi has had an offer on the table for Sainz for some time. When questioned if Binotto’s arrival would make Audi a more appealing option, Sainz said:

“Not really. My future is still being discussed and analyzed very carefully. There are changes in many teams that I’m observing for next year. The team market evolves just as much as the driver market. I will take my time to make a decision without giving away too many clues.”

Sainz indicated that while Binotto’s move to Audi is significant, it does not solely determine his future plans. He is carefully considering various factors and changes across multiple teams before making a decision.

    Sainz’s Commitment to F1

Despite being linked to various teams, ranging from front-runners to midfield contenders like Sauber, Sainz ruled out the possibility of taking a year off if he cannot secure a spot with a leading team. He emphasized his commitment to staying in Formula 1:

“Absolutely no, a sabbatical is not even in my head. I love Formula 1 and would rather join a midfield team and use my skills at the peak of my career to help them progress, rather than taking a year off or being a third driver.”

Sainz expressed his passion for the sport and his willingness to contribute to a midfield team’s development if necessary. He believes that his experience and skills can make a significant impact, even outside of a top team.

    The Broader Context

The announcement of Binotto’s move to Audi is part of a broader trend of significant changes in the F1 paddock. Audi’s restructuring efforts, which include hiring experienced personnel like Binotto, signal their ambitious plans for the future. This aligns with other strategic moves, such as Flavio Briatore’s appointment as Executive Advisor at Alpine and various technical reshuffles across teams.

    Looking Ahead

As Sainz continues to weigh his options, the Formula 1 world eagerly awaits his decision, which could have significant implications for the driver market and team dynamics in the coming seasons. His decision-making process is influenced by multiple factors, including team performance, management changes, and future prospects within the sport.

Sainz remains a crucial figure in the driver market, but he insists he won’t be rushed into making a decision. When asked if his decision might come before or after the summer break, he commented:

“I honestly cannot give you an answer. I don’t know if it will be before or after the summer break. I simply don’t know.”

His thoughtful approach reflects his desire to make the best possible choice for his career, ensuring he remains competitive and fulfilled in the sport he loves.
