Daniel Ricciardo, a prominent figure in Formula 1, recently admitted that he considered the possibility of replacing Sergio Perez at Red Bull for the remainder of the 2024 season. With the Dutch Grand Prix on the horizon, Ricciardo’s reflections have sparked discussions among fans and experts alike.
Ricciardo’s Thoughts on Replacing Perez
During the summer break, rumors swirled about potential changes within the Red Bull team. Despite these speculations, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner confirmed that Sergio Perez would continue as Max Verstappen’s teammate starting from the Dutch Grand Prix. Perez had been under pressure due to a series of underwhelming performances, finishing no better than seventh since the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in May, and suffering four Q1 eliminations.
Given Yuki Tsunoda’s uncertain position and Ricciardo’s strong performances, many believed that the Australian driver might be promoted to the main Red Bull team for the final 10 races of the season. Reflecting on this possibility, Ricciardo shared, “I didn’t rule it out. I thought maybe something could happen, but I also didn’t expect it or get my hopes up.”
Ricciardo’s Focus on Performance
Although Ricciardo did not receive the call to join the main Red Bull team, he remained mentally prepared for such an opportunity. “I was aware ‘maybe something changes,’ but I just thought: ‘Do what I’m doing, and if I get a call, I get a call.’ I didn’t get a call, but that’s what I mentally prepared myself for,” Ricciardo explained.
With no contract secured for next year, Ricciardo has expressed his desire to return to Red Bull. However, the situation is further complicated by the presence of Liam Lawson, who, according to team advisor Helmut Marko, is “certainly” in line for a seat in one of the Red Bull or RB cars in 2025. This development means that one of Perez, Ricciardo, or Tsunoda could be left without a seat in the Red Bull family.
Ricciardo on Lawson’s F1 Future
Ricciardo praised Liam Lawson for his impressive performance during his stint as a reserve driver for AlphaTauri (now RB) last year. “I got to see Liam drive the car last year, and I think he did a great job and is worthy of a seat on the grid,” Ricciardo said. “In a way, I’m happy for him. If he’s guaranteed a seat on the grid next year, that’s good because he is a deserving driver.”
As Ricciardo continues to focus on his performance, he remains optimistic about securing a seat for the 2025 season. “What that means for me is probably a bit unknown, but if I perform, they will find a spot for me somewhere!” Ricciardo added.
Daniel Ricciardo’s reflections on a potential promotion within the Red Bull team highlight the complexities and uncertainties of Formula 1. As the 2024 season progresses, all eyes will be on Ricciardo, Perez, and Lawson as they navigate their paths within the Red Bull family.
