James Vowles Surprised Mercedes and Red Bull Didn’t Push to Sign Carlos Sainz for 2025

In a move that has sent ripples through the Formula 1 paddock, Williams has successfully signed Carlos Sainz for the 2025 season and beyond, a deal that has left James Vowles, Williams’ Team Principal, both elated and surprised. Vowles, who has long admired Sainz, admitted that he expected more competition from top-tier teams like Mercedes and Red Bull when it came to securing the Spanish driver’s signature.

Sainz’s Move to Williams: A Key Player in the Driver Market

Carlos Sainz, who has been ousted by Ferrari in favor of Lewis Hamilton, was at the center of numerous speculations and negotiations regarding his future in Formula 1. With strong links to Red Bull, Mercedes, and Alpine, Sainz’s decision to join Williams was a pivotal moment in the driver market puzzle for the 2025 season. Many within the sport described Sainz as the ‘cork in the bottle,’ with his choice expected to set off a chain reaction of driver movements.

However, as the summer break began, it was Williams who announced that Sainz would be driving for the Grove-based team. Vowles expressed his delight at securing a driver he considers one of the best on the grid, noting, “I rate him as one of the top four drivers, if not at times the number two driver on the grid. Why wouldn’t you want that in your stable?”

Why Didn’t Mercedes and Red Bull Pursue Sainz?

Despite his high praise for Sainz, Vowles was candid about his surprise that more competitive teams didn’t push harder to sign the Spaniard. “When you’re in Red Bull’s position, where you’ve got a constructors’ championship at risk, it’s always a hard decision but, yes, I would have Carlos alongside Max [Verstappen]. If you’re in Mercedes, it’s a hard choice… They’ve swayed between not being competitive – in which case it makes sense to invest in the future – to being very competitive.”

Vowles also acknowledged that both Mercedes and Red Bull likely had their reasons for not pursuing Sainz more aggressively, given their status as multiple world champions. “They’ve made their decisions sensibly… But I was surprised,” Vowles added.

    A Bright Future for Williams

The signing of Sainz is a significant statement of intent from Williams, a team that has struggled in recent years but has shown signs of resurgence. Their best finish in the constructors’ championship in recent history came in 2023 when they narrowly secured seventh place. Vowles believes that bringing Sainz on board, alongside reliable points-scorer Alex Albon, is a strong indicator of Williams’ ambitions for the future.

“I think it’s a huge, huge event for Williams to have two of the best drivers in the world fighting at the front,” Vowles explained. “It’s very much a sign of things to come… The fact that we are prepared to have the investment required to be there.”

Vowles also reflected on the personal significance of the signing, noting, “I said this to Carlos anyway – it was one of the proudest moments of my career, and I’ve had lots of great moments of my career. The fact he chose us above all else is a monumental decision.”

    Conclusion

As Williams gears up for the 2025 season with Carlos Sainz in their ranks, the team’s future looks brighter than ever. While it may have been a surprise that Mercedes and Red Bull didn’t make a stronger push for Sainz, his decision to join Williams marks a new chapter for both the driver and the team. Formula 1 fans will undoubtedly be watching closely to see how this partnership unfolds on the track.
