Havertz Breaks the Deadlock
The match began under sunny skies at the Emirates, with Arsenal fans filled with optimism for the new season. The Gunners took control early on, dictating the tempo and creating several scoring opportunities. Ben White and Bukayo Saka tested Wolves’ goalkeeper, Jose Sa, with early attempts, while Declan Rice saw his shot narrowly miss the target.
Arsenal’s persistent pressure paid off in the 25th minute. Oleksandr Zinchenko won the ball in midfield and fed Saka, who delivered a perfect cross into the box. Kai Havertz outjumped the Wolves defense to head the ball past Sa, opening his account for the season and giving Arsenal a deserved lead.
Wolves Respond
Despite Arsenal’s dominance, Wolves nearly equalized ten minutes later. Hwang Hee-Chan’s cross found Jorgen Strand Larsen, whose header was superbly saved by David Raya, keeping the Gunners in front. This vital save ensured Arsenal went into halftime with a slender 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Arsenal continued to push for a second goal. Gabriel Martinelli set up Havertz inside the box, but the German’s effort lacked precision and sailed wide. Thomas Partey also went close with a powerful shot from 20 yards.
Wolves, however, grew into the game and began to threaten more after the introduction of Matheus Cunha. The visitors nearly found an equalizer when Rayan Ait-Nouri’s shot from distance narrowly missed the target. Moments later, Cunha was denied by another crucial save from Raya after a misplaced pass by William Saliba.
Saka Seals the Win
Arsenal’s nerves were finally settled in the 74th minute. After receiving a free-kick just inside Wolves’ half, Partey passed to Havertz, who laid the ball off to Saka. The England winger cut inside and unleashed a powerful left-footed strike past Sa, doubling Arsenal’s lead and securing the victory.
The final stages of the game saw few chances for either side, but Raya ensured Arsenal’s clean sheet by saving a late volley from Pablo Sarabia. The win marked Arsenal’s third consecutive opening-day victory, a feat they last achieved in 2010. Mikel Arteta’s men will look to build on this strong start as they head to Aston Villa next weekend.
