The History and Thrills of the Belgian Grand Prix

In a race that will be remembered for its strategic brilliance and nail-biting finish, George Russell claimed a sensational victory at the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver, executing a daring one-stop strategy, showcased exceptional skill and composure to fend off a fierce late-race challenge from his teammate Lewis Hamilton. As the Spa-Francorchamps circuit played host to another classic showdown, Russell’s win not only marked his third career triumph in Formula 1 but also solidified his reputation as one of the sport’s brightest stars.

    History Of Belgian GP

The origins of the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps date back to 1921 when designers Jules de Thier and Henri Langlois van Ophem envisioned a grand racing circuit. They used public roads connecting the towns of Francorchamps, Malmedy, and Stavelot, creating an astounding 14.9km triangular track. This circuit, nestled in the beautiful Ardennes region, has seen numerous transformations. In 1979, the track was redeveloped, reducing its length to 7.004km. Despite being half of its original size, it remains the longest circuit on the current Formula 1 calendar.

Belgian GP: What’s the Circuit Like?

The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is beloved by Formula 1 drivers for its blend of long straights and challenging corners. This track allows drivers to push their cars to the limit, especially if the weather is dry. However, the circuit’s size and the unpredictable Belgian weather often mean that conditions can vary dramatically around the track. One part might be wet while another is dry, creating a unique challenge. The Eau Rouge and Raidillon sequence is particularly famous, requiring precision as drivers navigate the left-right-left combination up a steep hill.

    Belgian GP: Why Go?

Spa is a classic European track that only the greatest drivers have mastered. Legends like Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher have showcased their skills here. The stunning setting in the Ardennes forest adds to the track’s allure, making it a favorite among fans. In 2017, a record 265,000 spectators attended the Spa showdown, underscoring its popularity.

Belgain GP: Where Is the Best Place to Watch?

For the best view of the iconic Eau Rouge corner, head to the elevated grandstand near this section. This spot also offers panoramic views from La Source through to Raidillon. For an immersive trackside atmosphere, the grandstand at Pouhon corner is an excellent choice.

Verstappen and Tsunoda to Start from the Back

Both Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda received grid penalties and will be starting from the back of the grid at the Belgian Grand Prix due to their new power units.

Red Bull has opted to introduce new power unit components to both cars, exceeding the permitted number for the season. As a result, Verstappen will face a 10-place grid penalty, while Tsunoda’s extensive changes mean he will start at the very back of the grid.
